Get The Look – The Textured Bob

66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals
We loved seeing all the textured bobs at the 2014 Emmy Awards!
Stars like Kristen WiigJulianne Hough, and Kate Mara all looked gorgeous with this chic, purposefully messy style.
This look works day or night, and is incredibly easy to duplicate!
1. Using a medium-size curling iron, curl 2-inch sections of hair, starting at the crown, without curling the ends. Alternate the direction of the curl with each section.
2. Flip hair upside down and work a small amount of volumizing mousse or dry shampoo into the roots to add volume.
3. Flip hair back over, and tousle hair with your fingers as needed to break up the curls and get the desired level of messiness.
4. Apply a small amount of pomade to just the ends of a few sections of hair, to create a piecey texture, and finish with your favorite hairspray.

Karine Herrin, a Master Stylist and Extension Expert at I’m Beautiful Salon in Salt Lake City, Utah, posted this photo of her client on INSTAGRAM and we loved the use of extensions for length and balayage for contrast and a soft ombre.   We contacted her to get her steps, formulas and products used so we could share with you.  Here it is!

 HOW TO:

STEP ONE: All regrowth, which was a natural level 7, was covered using TIGI Copyright Colour with 21 grams of 7/0 and 7 grams of 6/34 with TIGI’s 8.5 volume cream developer.

STEP TWO: Next, Karine used TIGI True Light Lightener with TIGI’s 20 volume cream developer in diagonal back foiled slices going up both sides of the head.

STEP THREE: Allow to process under heat for 25 minutes.

STEP FOUR: After rinsing out color, while still at the shampoo bowl, Karine balayaged all the ends with True Light Lightener and 30 volume cream developer for about 15-20 minutes.

STEP FIVE: After she was rinsed and dried, Karine put 1.5 rows of Natural Beaded Row Hair Extensions to add body and a little more length. She used Bohyme extension hair, colors 27 and 27/30.

STEP SIX: The style was finished with a 1 inch curling iron.

Prairie – The Collection by Sassoon Academy

Image

Click the photo to see the entire new collection!

A hot desert wind blows through Sassoon geometry this season disturbing and provoking its iconic house codes!

Inspired by the expansive wilderness of the old American West, the Prairie Collection journeys through the arid deserts of Arizona; the wild open prairies of Nevada and the raw red earth of New Mexico meeting a series of the frontier’s pioneers along the way.

Geometric outlines are interrupted with sawtooth sectioning and barbered fades. Overlapping tousled lengths combine with extreme overdirection to create a tough texture with a storm-swept feel. Clear design is pointed into and blown about; edges are sketched and appear undefined.

Color sectioning is flowing and organic taking its shape from the desert flowers of artist Georgia O’Keefewhose palette of bone white and carbon is combined with the artisan jewellery of the Navajo. Turquoise and tourmaline meet silver and rose gold; dusty pinks combine with smokey quartz to create subtle shifts of tone.

TREND ALERT: Hair Cut Party

Image

Taylor Swift made a big deal about her new hair cut, and people noticed! Hair cut parties are already being requested at salons just one day after Swift’s big ‘do to-do.

Jump on board by following quick tips to host a successful haircut party like T-Swift’s, including tips from George the salon in Chicago:

  1. Make a big change. No one wants to go to a public showing of someone having his or her bangs trimmed. Swift chopped off her gold locks for a dramatic new look (that kind of looks like Karlie Kloss; somebody had to say it). “Sometimes big changes are difficult for us, and the support of your friends and family makes it easier to go through a drastic cut,” says George Gonzalez, owner of George the salon.
  2. Give back. Gonzalez suggests connecting with a local charity and donating your hair.
  3. Location, location, location. Create a night out at the salon or travel off-site for special occasions.
  4. Make it fun! Obviously, not everyone is Taylor Swift, so most haircut parties probably won’t occur after a concert in London. That doesn’t mean parties can’t feature music (Taylor Swift if you’re feeling particularly inspired), refreshments and lots of pics on social media for encouragement and style suggestions.
  5. Get a good crowd. Everyone was very enthusiastic at Swift’s party, and we get it: She’s Taylor Swift. But hair cut parties for less-famous individuals can be equally exciting with a decent amount of people who are looking forward to a good reveal. Plus, says Gonzalez, friends can give the extra push a client needs to go through with a big change.

5 Tips For Stylists: How To Stay Happy

Brittney Carmichael is a favorite with her clients not only because of her skill level but also for her positive vibes that people pick up on. On the website for her salon, OMG Hairstyles in Frisco, TX, Carmichael’s husband praises his wife and all hairdressers: “She’s the person you share your life with who never judges….She’s your friend. Plus she makes you shine.”

As our Healthy Hairdresser of the Week, Brit Carmichael shares her “5 Tips for the Busy Stylist to Increase Energy!” We especially like #5—check it out:

1. Take a 30-minute break! Schedule a break during your busy schedule just for yourself. A quiet and calming 15 minutes does wonders for your overall state of health and happiness!! Follow that with a 15-minute “work window” to return calls, send emails and make product orders.

2. Relax between appointments. Make it a priority to relax your mind and body by taking ten deep breaths before you move on to your next guest. It is a great way to balance the mind and body and prepare yourself to be of service to the next guest. It is our job as stylists to command the energy of the conversation. When we are relaxed, we can help our guests to become more relaxed as well.

3. Grab a snack! Prepare quick and easy—but healthful—foods that you can eat on the go. Chopped-up veggie sticks, fruit, nuts and seeds, granola and hummus dip are great suggestions for grabbing a quick boost of energy in between clients.

4. Stay hydrated! Keep a water bottle near you at all times. As a stylist, we talk a lot with our clients. Soothe your throat by adding a little lemon and honey—or cucumber!—to your water to boost your pH level for increased energy.

5. Think Happy! When you are thinking happy, you are feeling happy. Maintaining a positive mental attitude by choosing to see the goodness in every person will help keep your energy flowing freely. Focus on the beautiful qualities of life—joy, love, peace, truth and kindness.

In the how-to below learn how to re-create the style in this “Snowboarding” Olympic look created by Russian Wella Hairdresser Roman Lazarev

“I am very proud to host The Winter Olympics in my country; it is an opportunity to show Russia and Russian people to the world, says Lazarev. “Women demonstrate power in snowboarding. Beauty, energy, dynamic – that was in my mind when I thought about snowboarding women. But these women also own freedom and grace. Women always want to be beautiful, even after long training sessions. That’s what inspired me to create this style.”

STEP 1: Apply Wella Professionals Oil Reflections and Wella Professionals Elastic Energy Mousse on wet hair before drying with a hairdryer.

STEP 2: Use irons to create curls from the middle of the hair length. Then make few a bit chaotic movements to forward to give the curls direction.

STEP 3: Keep front strands straight and fix it with Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray.
